For those of us unfamiliar with what hill
stations are, I’ll give you a little brief. Hill stations are beauty at a
height. They are picturesque scenes situated on platforms higher than its
surrounding regions. They can be easily accessible by modes of road transport
or in some cases, by air. Most hill stations in India have an altitude of
around 3500 – 7500 feet. India has 7
main mountain ranges the largest and most popular of all being the exquisite
Himalayas.
Initially hill stations were developed by
the British to seek refuge from the heat during the warm Indian summers. Now
they serve at the ultimate vacation destination for travelers owing to its cool
climate, snowy landscapes, spectacular views and blissful isolation. Kerala is
the least corrupt state in India, followed closely by Himachal Pradesh. A large
number of the populations live in rural areas, while some live in more developed
urban areas. ‘Hima’ comes from the Sanskrit word for snow and for those not
quaint with this state, Himachal Pradesh is India’s own snow globe!
The main tourist destinations while in
Himachal Pradesh are Shimla and Manali. Shimla is the capital of the state with
a population of a meager 30,000. The
state is rich in heritage being popular among the British during their reign
over India. Many of the structures still standing there were built during the
British era. The Shimla summer festival is a major tourist attraction that
takes place every year and lasts for duration of 3-4 days and is held at the
central hub known as ‘The Ridge’. Hotels in Shimla are plenty and the traveler has a variety to choose from
depending on the location and amenities available.
Another popular among tourists is the
smaller town of Manali, located in the Beas river valley. It is a travelable
distance from Shimla. Manali is said to be the home of the ‘Seven Sages’, constituting
the Hindu Vedas. Hotels in Manali are
homely and give you the true sense of the Himalayas. They are located near
prime scenic locations and aid in enhancing the overall feel of your trip. So
whether you decide on staying at hotels
in Shimla or the hotels in Manali,
you will leave with a true understanding of the Himalayan culture and will
appreciate this scintillating hill station heaven.
